Knott’s Scary Farm
Monsters pretending to be humans, pretending to be monsters.
Any time you enter a scary themed park for the Halloween season, you’ll come face to face with creatures from your nightmares. Whether you scary easy or not, you might still jump when one of these haunted ghouls jump out of the darkness. But what is it like on the inside of their hood?
We all love and appreciate the work the monsters do at any of the theme parks. I recently visited Knott’s Scary Farm, where one of the monsters dragged me back to their layer. While waiting for them to feast on my bones, the beast and I had a great conversation. I asked them a few questions about what it’s like to be one of the monsters that go bump at night.

Sometimes human places, create inhuman monsters
What is your favorite thing about being a Knott’s Scary Farm monster?
My favorite thing about being a monster is putting on a show. Sometimes it’s the first time coming through a maze for some of the guests. Because it’s the first time seeing everything, they’re expecting it to be terrifying and fun. Because there are so many different people coming into the maze, it’s important to remember every scare counts toward their experience. It’s a fun idea to change things up and try different scare tactics each time.
Have you scared any famous people?
They have celebrity night at Knott’s Scary Farm. My first time, I got to scare the influencer Tana Mongeau and Noah Cyrus. I didn’t recognize them until another monster told me. I also got to scare Travis Barker, the drummer from Blink 182. He came through, and as I was scaring him, I became star struck and paused until he walked by.
Has there been a time where you, as a monster, have been scared in the park?
My first time as a monster, I got so scared I dropped my things and kept running – I never went back for them. But then I have to get into the zone to scare guests. It’s a game in my maze with the other monsters. We have competitions on how bad we can scare guests.
What are the struggles of being a scary monster?
It’s a very physical job, being a monster. You’re giving it your all for the entire night, running around, making noises, and crawling toward people. Because we have to do whatever it takes for a scare. It’s fun but very demanding. It feels like a long workout. Most mazes, depending on the schedule, you don’t leave until your maze’s line is gone. Sometimes there are 40,000 guests in the park.
What advice would you give someone who also wants to be a monster?
Some advice to be a monster is to give it your all when you’re auditioning. There are plenty of opportunities to be a monster in all of the scare zones and mazes. It’s essential to have fun.
