Several Southern California chefs and restaurants were recently named semifinalists in the prestigious 2025 James Beard Awards. It’s an honor that not many culinary creatives achieve in their lifetime and — regardless of who goes on to win — it’s a tremendous recognition of the hard work and talent it takes to be the best of the best.
For diners, it’s also a guide to where you can experience some truly incredible food and/or drinks — provided you can get in. Below is a full list of SoCal semifinalists, but first, here are some tips on how to score a seat at some of the hottest spots in the region.
Plan ahead and reserve early.
- Many buzzworthy spots book weeks or even months in advance. Check the restaurant’s website or reservation platform (like OpenTable, Resy, or Tock) to secure your spot as soon as reservations open.
- For highly sought-after places, set calendar reminders for when booking becomes available or sign up for alerts through their system. Of course, some award-worthy restaurants don’t take reservations, so be prepared to wait in line and try to shoot for times that are less-busy (more on that below.)
Be flexible with timing.
- If you’re willing to dine outside peak hours, such as early in the evening or late at night, you’re more likely to snag a table.
- Weekdays also tend to have less competition compared to weekends.
- Bars often operate on a walk-in basis, so arriving early or visiting during quieter times can help you get a spot.
Take advantage of bar seating or walk-in policies.
- Many restaurants reserve bar seating or a small portion of tables for walk-ins. If reservations are full, show up before the restaurant opens to claim a walk-in spot or seat at the bar.
- Keep in mind that patience and flexibility are key, as you might have to wait, but it’s often worth it for an unforgettable experience.
Use social media and insider tips.
- Follow the restaurant, bar or bakery on social media for updates on cancellations, new reservation openings or special events. Engage with their posts or stories to stay informed about their latest policies or opportunities to visit.
- Additionally, network with food-savvy friends or online communities like food forums and local groups to gain insider tips or recommendations.
